Can you tell us a little about your background before starting at your company?

I grew up in a small town with agricultural roots, the kind of place where the local bank wasn’t just a building; it was part of how the community functioned. When our small town had a community bank, it was thriving. When that bank disappeared, my uncle, Larry, was one of the people who championed building a new one. I didn’t know it at the time, but that stuck with me.

Before founding Voyager AI, I spent years building financial services and AI infrastructure. I started my career at Robert W. Baird, then joined the mFoundry team, where we built the first mobile banking platform. We changed how people interacted with their money, making it possible to enjoy a day in the park instead of running down to a branch to cash a check. After our acquisition by FIS, I established their earliest advanced analytics and AI programs, later expanding that leadership at Northwestern Mutual and ultimately serving as an SVP leading data platforms
for a major financial services company. Those experiences taught me exactly what it takes to build technology that financial institutions can trust.

How did you start at your company? What were the first steps you took to get it off the ground and how did you identify the need for your product/service in the market?

Voyager AI started with a clear vision: rapid advances in artificial intelligence were reshaping
the competitive landscape, and we wanted to make sure community institutions weren’t left
behind.

At first, my focus was purely technical: ensuring we could package AI within a secure, private environment that inherently understood banking regulations. These were the challenges we believed we had to solve to build the kind of technical moat that FIs would trust. But as we spoke directly with customers, the real mission came into focus. Community banks grow by lending, but the types of commercial lending that drive the most growth are complex
and take months to execute. That was our “aha” moment. Secure AI wasn’t the final product; it was the foundation needed to solve a massive operational bottleneck. We realized that to truly help these institutions, we had to speed up and streamline their most critical lending processes without sacrificing security or compliance.

What innovations or unique features set your company apart from others in the industry?

Two things set us apart. First, we built compliance automation as the foundation, not an add-on. This industry is highly fragmented, with each small capability carved off and solved in isolation. We believe that bringing a team’s various roles together, without creating blocking points between them, is what actually makes the work function. We took “audit ready by design” and made it more than a checklist; it’s part of a team playing together for the customer.

Second, we designed the platform to keep the “human in the lead.” This is a deliberate step beyond keeping a “human in the loop” to approve an AI’s work. Instead, the loan officer or analyst drives the process forward, and the AI works in the background to accelerate their tasks. We aren’t trying to replace human judgment. These complex lending products exist to improve our communities, and our goal is to empower the people who manage them to do so efficiently and profitably.

What has been the most effective strategy for scaling your business?

As we grow, I’m leaning heavily on my network. Anyone who has worked in this sector knows it comes down to relationships. We’ve been building our network of partners like CAFE (ftcafe.org) and IgniteFI (ignitefi.com), and reaching out to the people we’ve worked with over the years. It’s been incredibly validating to see that the team we built during the early days of mobile banking still supports one another.

We’re also excited to share our progress on a larger stage in the coming months, including demos at Finovate in NYC, presentations at MoneyLIVE in Chicago, and sponsorship of VentureTech in November. Through all of this, we remain disciplined about who we build for first. We are focused on showing up for our customers with authenticity and a real mission.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your company?

Our goal hasn’t changed since day one: build a more capable financial system, one community lending organization at a time. Concretely, that means scaling our platform from pilot to full deployment, deepening what the software can do across the entire loan lifecycle to make lending faster, and ensuring every institution that uses Voyager AI retains its own voice.

That sounds straightforward, but it’s going to be a challenge for financial institutions as larger tech companies push to commoditize banking services. When I think about the future of this industry, I think about that small-town bank my uncle helped build. It worked because it was theirs, run their way, for their people. If we do our job right, that will remain true for every institution using Voyager AI, no matter how much the underlying technology changes.
