Healthcare organizations now have access to increasingly sophisticated surveillance and forecasting data that can help them understand where respiratory illness is rising and how demand may change. The CDC itself uses historical trends, real-time disease activity, expert assessments, and scenario modeling to forecast respiratory disease burden and help healthcare decision-makers prepare for potential surges (CDC).
For health systems, better forecasting can inform staffing, bed capacity, scheduling, and resource allocation before waiting rooms begin filling up.
Keeping Every Patient Out of the Waiting Room
Not every cough, fever, or positive COVID test requires an emergency department visit.
Virtual care and remote patient monitoring can help healthcare organizations direct patients toward the right level of care while allowing clinicians to keep an eye on higher-risk patients from home.
For patients, that can mean getting guidance without sitting in a crowded waiting room. For healthcare systems, it can mean reserving in-person capacity for the patients who actually need it.
The opportunity becomes especially important during seasonal surges. A health system does not necessarily need more physical capacity for every increase in demand if technology can help it use existing capacity more intelligently.

Technology cannot solve seasonal staffing challenges on its own. But it can change how clinicians spend their limited time.
Documentation, patient communication, scheduling, intake, coding, and other repetitive workflows compete with time spent delivering care. That is making administrative AI one of the most immediate opportunities for healthcare organizations.
The results are becoming measurable. A 2025 multicenter study of 263 clinicians found that after 30 days of using ambient AI scribes, reported burnout declined from 51.9% to 38.8%, alongside improvements in after-hours documentation time and attention given to patients (American Medical Association).
During a quieter period, those saved minutes matter. During peak respiratory season, they can become even more valuable.
Connecting the Patient Journey
Seasonal healthcare demand rarely exists neatly within one part of the system.
A patient may begin with a virtual consultation, receive diagnostic testing, get a prescription, and eventually require in-person care. When those systems do not communicate, technology can create more work rather than less.
That makes interoperability increasingly important. In July 2026, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT released USCDI Version 7, continuing federal efforts to establish standards that support nationwide electronic health information exchange (HealthIT.gov).
The goal is not simply to add another AI tool or digital health platform. It is to create a healthcare experience in which information can follow the patient and clinicians have the context they need to make decisions quickly.
Seasonal Pressure Is a Technology Stress Test
Cold, flu, COVID, and RSV season will eventually pass. The underlying capacity problem will not.
That makes the coming months more than another seasonal challenge. They are a real-world test of whether healthcare technology can deliver on its biggest promise: helping healthcare organizations expand their capabilities without simply asking their people to work harder.
The health systems best prepared for the next surge may not be the ones with the most technology.
They will be the ones using it where it actually gives clinicians time back, helps patients access the right care, and allows the entire system to respond faster.
