Can you tell us a little about your background before starting at your company?

I was born in Singapore but grew up in Auckland, New Zealand. My career has taken a slightly unconventional path.

In 2010, I became the first person to row solo from Australia to New Zealand, spending 54 days at sea and covering more than 2,700 miles. That experience taught me a lot about resilience, decision-making under pressure and committing to something when the outcome is far from certain.

Afterwards, I spent six years in payments, including leading U.S. growth for what is now Xplor. In 2014, I founded my first startup, Genoapay, in the buy-now-pay-later sector. We scaled the business to 1.5 million users and 14,000 merchants before exiting in 2020. After that journey, my co-founder and I knew we wanted to build together again but this time we wanted to tackle a much larger, more complex industry problem. That became Simfuni.

How did you start at your company? What were the first steps you took to get it off the ground and how did you identify the need for your product/service in the market?

We started with an unvalidated hunch: the customer and operator experiences across insurance simply weren’t keeping pace with modern expectations. That view initially came from our own frustrating experiences as customers.

My co-founder and I had previously built technology that supported millions of customers across billing and payments, so we knew the level of infrastructure, connectivity and automation required to deliver great digital experiences. When we looked at insurance, much of that foundation appeared to be missing. Rather than immediately building a product, we spent a significant amount of time validating the problem. We conducted hundreds of interviews across the industry from frontline operators through to technology leaders, VPs and C-suite executives. Each conversation took us deeper into why the industry had been difficult to modernise, what conditions were needed for meaningful change, and, importantly, where a new company could enter the market and create value quickly.

We identified payments as the ideal starting point. It was one of the most common interactions between an insurer and its customers, but more importantly, we saw it as a digital front door into the much larger operational infrastructure sitting behind an insurance policy.

That became our wedge into the industry. From there, Simfuni has continued to move deeper into the operational core of life insurance—and we haven’t looked back.

What innovations or unique features set your company apart from others in the industry?

What sets Simfuni apart is that we’re not adding another layer to life insurance we’ve rebuilt and connected the operational core so it is ready for the age of AI.

Most life insurers have systems that record policies, but the day-to-day work of running those policies is still coordinated across disconnected tools, shared inboxes, spreadsheets, specialist applications and manual hand-offs. The result is high servicing costs, slow change, limited visibility and an operational environment that is difficult for either people or AI to execute against.

Simfuni closes that gap by combining the system of record with the system of action.

Our platform not only holds policy and customer information; it applies business rules, orchestrates workflows and executes the activities required to service a policy from payments and communications through to servicing, underwriting, claims and accounting—all within one governed environment.

That becomes especially powerful as AI moves from simply answering questions to actually completing work. AI needs secure access to the right data, rules, controls and execution capability. Simfuni provides that foundation, allowing insurers to progressively move from manual servicing to automation and, ultimately, increasingly autonomous operations. And this isn’t theoretical. More than 8000 different workflows are completed every day and this continues to grow with new insurers onboarding.

We believe the next generation of life insurers will be defined not by how much AI they experiment with, but by whether their core infrastructure can actually put AI to work. That is the problem Simfuni was built to solve.

We believe this is the next major shift for the industry: moving from fragmented, manual operations toward increasingly automated and ultimately autonomous policy servicing.

What has been the most effective strategy for scaling your business?

Life insurance has traditionally had long buying cycles, and for good reason. Replacing or changing core technology carries real operational, regulatory and balance-sheet risk, so insurers are understandably cautious. We knew from the outset that asking a carrier to make a large transformation decision on day one would be the wrong approach. Our strategy has therefore been to make the first step as simple, valuable and low-risk as possible.

Simfuni was designed as a modular platform, allowing insurers to solve a specific problem first, prove value quickly and then expand into broader parts of the operating stack as trust builds. Payments was our original entry point, but the same approach now allows customers to progressively adopt policy administration, servicing, workflow and automation capabilities.

We have also deliberately focused on segments of the life insurance market that have historically been underserved by legacy technology providers and where there is significant pent-up demand for better customer and operator experiences.

Finally, we have invested heavily in the tooling and processes required to make migration and onboarding faster, safer and more repeatable. In our market, scaling is not simply about generating more leads it is about systematically removing the barriers that stop insurers from changing.

For us, the formula has been simple: lower the risk of taking the first step, deliver value quickly, earn trust, and expand from there.

Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your company?

Life insurance is one of the last trillion-dollar industries still running on infrastructure that was never designed for the internet, let alone artificial intelligence.

Our ambition is to change that.

Simfuni’s mission is to rebuild the operational core of life insurance and create the foundation for increasingly autonomous operations where people and AI can work together to service customers faster, more accurately and with greater control.

Looking ahead, our goal is for Simfuni to power the next generation of life insurance operations around the world. We believe the companies that modernise their core infrastructure today will be the ones best positioned to take advantage of AI tomorrow, and we want Simfuni to be the platform that makes that transition possible.
